Chicagoans stand up to keep Uber in Chicago

bucktown, celebrities, chicago, Food, Networking, nightlife, Pictures, Press, restaurants, Uncategorized

For those not familiar, Uber is a mobile app that lets you request a Private Driver or TAXI at the touch of a button.

In almost 15 months in Chicago, Uber has driven thousands of Chicagoans to their favorite restaurants, kept them stylish en route to killer events, or gotten them home safely after a late night in the office. Uber has even helped with a few ‘Rides of Glory’ – a morning ride that comes only a few hours after a late night ride to the same location. It should come as no surprise that River North and Lincoln Park had the highest concentration of those types of rides :) .

During our time in Chicago, we’ve felt extremely welcomed by Chicago’s amazing bar and restaurant scene – especially the Rockit Ranch family. It’s been great to partner up on numerous events, including our Restaurant Week special in February, where we provided free rides to Sunda during lunch. We’re excited to bring Chicago even more exciting promotions over the next few months including the upcoming ‘Uber Sleigh’. Throughout December we’ll be collecting toys in Ubers, and eventually donating them to charity.

Unfortunately, recently proposed Chicago regulations would prohibit Uber’s Black car service from operating in Chicago. In addition to preventing Uber from bringing the style and safety to your transportation, these regulations would limit the earning potential of over 1,000 drivers who partner with Uber. By restricting the use of technology in the transportation industry, these regulations also raise concerns for anyone who believes that innovation is the key to Chicago’s future growth and status as a truly world-class city.

Even with that minor roadblock, we’re working hard to ensure that Uber will be here for a long time. Plus, the support from Chicagoans has been amazing! If you haven’t taken a ride, sign up here and receive $10 off your first ride!

For updates on Uber including information on our regulatory issues and the upcoming toy drive, make sure to follow us on Twitter.

AKIRA Goes Metropolitan for Their BIG 10 Year Anniversary Fall Fashion Show!

Art, bucktown, celebrities, charity, chicago, fashion, Food, Fundraiser, General, Music, Networking, nightlife, Pictures, Press, restaurants, Video

I can honestly say that AKIRA is my favorite retail store in the entire city of Chicago and there are a million reasons why. I’ve narrowed it down to my top 5 so I can keep this short & sweet.

1.     Their insanely stylish & innovative women’s & men’s clothing /footwear

2.     All of their locations (Over 17 in neighborhoods all over the city & even the suburbs!!)

3.     Their amazing customer service & stylists (You won’t walk out their door without a bag or two swung over your shoulder)

4.     The co-owner …Jon Cotay (Sweetest & smartest owner in the industry…hands down!)

5.     & last but definitely not least…their FASHION SHOWS!

In just a few days (this Sunday) the magic will unfold and Chicagoans will watch in awe as AKIRA unveils their 10th Annual Fall Fashion Show. I covered their Spring Fashion Show for this blog at the Lyric Opera House and it was so beautifully executed – I was more than impressed to say the least. Here’s what you can look forward to you:

Before the fabulous fashion show begins, make friends with a bartender and server, you’re not going to want to miss out on these treats …the bar will be stocked with Reyka Vodka, Peroni beer, Mionetto sparkling wine, Smartwater, Vitaminwater, Vita Coco, & Coco Café. As far as food goes, it’s quite an impressive list of local favs: Union Sushi, Wow Bao, Forever Yogurt, E.leaven, Lovely: A Bakeshop, Argent, Peeled, Bridge House Tavern, Mezza Grill, South Water Kitchen, Take Me Out, Moon Palace, Uncle Sammy’s, Hot Woks Cool Sushi, Staropolska in Logan Square, Indian Garden Restaurant, The Storefront Company, Baume & Brix, W Crossing, & Popchips...like I said, IMPRESSIVE.

The fashion show itself will be hosted by Miss USA 2012 (Olivia Culpo) & emceed by Kelli Zink (CelebTV).  Clothing and shoes for the show will be provided by some pretty awesome sponsors which include: Caterpillar, DL1961, 7 Diamonds, Michael Antonio, MIA, PF Flyers, Jeffrey Campbell, Diesel, Premium Lounge, French Connection, Original Penguin, Ben Sherman, & Bed Stu.  Best news? If you liked what you see on the runway, you’ll be able to buy it afterwards at a one-night only pop-up shop.

Okay, that may be a lie, the best part is that 5 different charity organizations will benefit from the proceeds raised throughout the night. Imerman Angels, Project Ladybug, Clara’s House, the Human Rights Campaign, & AKIRA’s Fashion Scholarship Fund will all reap the benefits.

If you thought the party stopped when the show ended, you’re wrong…so wrong. The after party continues at Japonais at 9pm and will be hosted by Miss Illinois USA 2012 (Ashley Hooks). Once that raps up the after-after party pops off at The Underground. So let loose, dress your best, & party til 5 am to celebrate the 10 YEARS AKIRA’s been rocking Chicago’s fashion scene.

There’s Nothing Tricky About This: Rev Run is About to Rock Chicago!

celebrities, chicago, fashion, Food, General, Music, Networking, nightlife, Pictures, Press, Radio, restaurants, TV Show

Summertime Chi…there’s nothing quite like it: concerts nightly, festivals every weekend, crazy cool parties (like last week’s Talent Show) every weekend; it’s nonstop fun this time of year & there’s more to come this week!

Rockit Ranch Productions invites you to an exclusive private party this Thursday where legendary emcee, (and star of MTV’s popular show, Run’s House), Rev Run, will be hitting the turntables at Venue One at 7pm (and it’s free!).  The show kicks off with a DJ set by well-known Chicagoan Dante and is followed up by Ruckus before Rev Run takes over.  Run DMC is credited with bringing hip-hop mainstream in the late 80s and early 90s and Rev Run has been a huge factor in providing audiences with some of the most recognizable songs in hip-hop for years – see any of the 5 hits from the ‘Discover Run DMC – EP’ – and he’s coming HERE, just for this show!

As if that wasn’t enough, the official after-party continues at Chicago hotspot, The Underground and you know that means it’ll be a good night, especially since the Summer Music Series is wrapping up with DJ Cobra so the beats will be bumping!  There will be complimentary trolleys to transport guests from Venue One to The Underground starting at 9:45pm.  This is just a taste of what’s to come next week for Lolla, so be sure to save some energy for then.

The hosts of this event, Bud Light Platinum, want attendees to get interactive on twitter (share your pics, experiences, etc.) and use the hashtag, #MAKEITPLATINUM, while at the event!  We want to show Bud Light that Chicago is the best city, so let’s get this trending!

Be sure to RSVP to GuestList@rockitranch.com to get your name on the list!  See you at Venue One tomorrow night!

Gala at the Zoo?!

celebrities, charity, chicago, fashion, Food, Fundraiser, Music, Nature, Networking, nightlife, Pictures, Press, restaurants

Friday, June 1st promises to be a one-of-a-kind night at Lincoln Park Zoo.  The zoo’s auxiliary board is hosting their signature fundraiser, Zoo-ologie, in the heart of the Zoo.  All the proceeds raised during this unique event will go towards helping care for the animals, keep up exhibits, as well as continue education initiatives all while keeping the zoo free to the public.  Lincoln Park Zoo is currently one of only three free zoos in the entire country – and we want it to stay that way!  If you live anywhere near Chicago, chances are you’ve enjoyed the beautiful grounds of the LP Zoo at some point in your life.  As a DePaul Alum, I walked through the zoo countless times on my way to and from the beach just because I could; not much is free these days, so you have to take advantage and enjoy those few things that are.

The Auxiliary Board for the Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the most popular fundraising groups in Chicago and certainly knows how to host a fun party!  The lineup for the evening promises to be quite memorable.  The VIP reception kicks off at 7pm, followed by cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 8pm.  Some of the featured food stations will include: Sunda, Rockit Bar & Grill, Rockit Burger Bar, Tavern on Rush and “Top Chef” alum Sarah Grueneberg’s Café SpiaggiaAKIRA is the proud fashion sponsor for Zoo-ologie to make things event better!! A silent auction, raffle and dancing under the stars kicks off at 9pm and goes until midnight.  Rock Candy will be on hand as the live entertainment from 9pm until midnight as well.  As if that wasn’t enough, the (after) party continues at Underground from midnight until 5am.

Tickets to the event start at $110 for general admission and VIP tickets are available for $150.  Be sure to get your tickets while they’re available for this awesome event that supports an even better cause!  See you under the stars at Lincoln Park Zoo on June 1st!

One Hope United Hosts “Eras of Hope”

charity, chicago, fashion, Food, Fundraiser, General, Music, Networking, nightlife

Hey Readers! It’s Sarah Vargo from Maven and Social Gravity. Are you looking to help children and travel through time while simultaneously mingling with Chicago’s non-profit, fashion and social scene? Look no further…One Hope United’s “Eras of Hope” event is this Saturday at Mercedes at 1520 West North Avenue, 7-11PM. One Hope United is celebrating a 117-year history of protecting children and strengthening families with this inaugural fashion event. April is Child Abuse Prevention month. We are gathering to raise awareness and funds to support One Hope United’s efforts to prevent these horrific events from happening, or happening again.

I am honored to be on the prestigious host committee along with Benjamin Cottrell (Benjamin Cottrell Designs), Delrice Adams (Forecast for the Arts), Glenn Murray (220 Communications), Jenaeth Markaj (One Hope United), Larry James (House of Trend) and Marco Foster (Marco Foster Events). This special evening will highlight four different eras: The Roaring ‘20s, Spirit of the ‘60s, Awesome ‘80s and Into the Future. What era will you dress up in? I am still trying to decide…should I be a flapper, hippie, a Go-Go with shoulder pads or a futuristic robot?  The possibilities are endless!

This event is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, St. Claire, Chicago Magazine and Soul Beauty. Fabulous fashion installations produced by Benjamin Cottrell Designs will feature looks created by four designers, with hair and makeup by Strange Beauty Show and Lora Michael. Fashion and music will change hourly, starting with the 1920s and moving through the eras. Guests will enjoy entertainment and dancing, music by David Fenmore, bites by Lucero Latin Catering, beverages by St. Claire vodka, premium goodie bags, silent auction and a complimentary one-year subscription to Chicago Magazine.

Tickets: $40 in advance; $50 at the door and can be purchased here: One Hope United and you can enter to win a pair of tickets on Billy’s Facebook page!

And of course the party will continue at Underground (56 W. Illinois). Thanks Rockit Ranch Productions!  Display your Blue Ribbon pin from Eras of Hope for no cover and express entry. Can’t wait to see which ERA you will be representing!

Thanks and see you there – Sarah Vargo

AVON Breast Cancer Benefit w/ Katarina Visnevska

charity, chicago, Fundraiser, General, Homepage Feature, nightlife

Hey there! It’s Morgan Waller from the Marketing Department here at Rockit Ranch Productions – so I’m taking a leap and writing for AChicagoThing.com for my first time ever – Nice to “meet” all of you! Normally I spend my days sitting behind a desk and running in heels from meeting to meeting, but this week I figured I’d take a minute to fill you all in on an amazing cause that runs deep through my family’s blood… Breast Cancer.

Every 3 minutes another woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. That means by the time you’re done reading this, a woman and her family are shocked with the news of cancer cells. Now, I don’t want to be a complete debbie downer, but statistics like this serve as my call to action. What can I do to make a difference? I’m not a doctor or a researcher or scientist (let’s get real…I spend my days coordinating marketing events), but what can I do for an hour or two out of MY week to lend a hand?

This is why I have dedicated my resources to plan a benefit THIS Friday, May 27th at the Underground. Doors will open at 9pm with specialty pink cocktails and a live performance by electric violinist Katarina Visnevska (if you haven’t seen her perform, she’s becoming a Chicago legend!) Bring your friends after dinner out in the city, or your coworkers if you’re working late, or your out of town visitors! What a better way to kick off Memorial Weekend than giving back? All donations taken at the door will go towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

After all, like I like to say… “Everybody loves ‘em, now let’s help save ‘em!” Feel free to shoot me an email with questions or to share your own story – morgan@rockitranch.com.
