If you follow me on twitter, you know I flew out to nyc this weekend to support my long time friend michelle williams (of “destiny’s child, pic of us above backstage), watching her light up broadway in the production of “chicago!”  not only was it super cool to support a local Chicagoan friend making it back (she starred her in “aida”) to the most significant theatre district in the world, (not to mention that I sat w/ her other friends beyonce and jay z!), but it was extra special that the story she was telling was a true one centered around another chicagoan’s story!
michelle played roxie whose story was based on the real story of chicagaon Beulah Annan who in 1924 was accused of killing the “intruder” Harry Kalstedt. it became a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune when reporter Maurine Watkins realized the sensational appeal her personality could draw through her tongue-in-cheek reports about roxie’s supposed pregnancy used to speed up the trial w/a sleek Hollywood like lawyer who helped define the media frenzy and the acquittal.  Later Tribune reporter Maurine decided to turn her experience with Chicago’s famed murder-row darling into a comedy titled CHICAGO that reached Broadway in 1926. A film version was created two years later and a second film version, “Roxie Hart,” starred Ginger Rogers in 1942. (more info on www.chicagothemusical.com)
After I came out of the production raving about michelle’s performance, many friends on facebook and twitter asked me how long it was playing… The answer is that this great “chicago” story will probably always be playing somewhere, but my advice is to do what ever you can to see Michelle in it as roxie!  She was absolutely amazing as always!  I’m really proud of her… now unfortunately her Broadway run ends April 13 (get out here if can!), but you can catch her in it in los angeles from April 20-May 9! don’t miss her!
