Movie Review of ‘Holy Motors: An Odyssey Into the City of Light’

Holy Motors marks the return of French auteur Leos Carax after a 13-year hiatus since his last film. And he arrives in grand fashion, positing an exuberant, surreal tale that’s quite unlike any other film in recent years. Any attempt to accurately and succinctly convey the narrative would prove futile, and perhaps beside the point. Mr. Carax presents an avant-garde patchwork of scenes, whose only commonalities are the lead character, the distinct visual fingerprints of its director, and a pervading sense of despair.

Calling all art and film buffs! This Friday April 20th there is a special screening of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry directed by Alison Klayman at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The film is traveling the country dominating film festivals one after another, and Chicago’s Human Rights Watch Film Festival is next up. If you don’t know who Ai Weiwei is you have got to check this out, and if you do I’m sure you can’t wait to see this. Ai Weiwei is considered China's most famous international artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic.

What does a local Chicago legendary rock venue and a thriving Texas arts festival have in common? After the Reggies SXSW Throwdown, quite a bit! Started in Austin in 1987 South By Southwest has grown into a week long music, film, and culture festival attended by nearly 20,000 people every year. Their lineup, consisting of musical acts, films, speakers, and others, features a great collection of current hot names but also tons of great up and coming artists.
