Jordan Lemick here- the representative from the Healthy Schools Campaign! I wanted to let you in on a great event that’s taking place this Friday. On November 9th at the Bridgeport Art Center, Chicago Public School students will be re-writing the recipe book for food that is served in our schools. Healthy Schools Campaign will bring fourteen Chicago Public Schools culinary teams to face off in a battle to create a gourmet healthy school lunch using only foods available to schools while following tight budgetary constraints.

Cooking up Change is the Healthy Schools Campaign’s flagship event to promote awareness of local and national efforts to reinvent school food so all students have nutritious, good-tasting meals. Not only is this a great opportunity to learn about the extraordinary efforts being made to improve school food, but guests also have the opportunity to meet blossoming student chefs in person, sample their creative meals, and vote for their favorite.  If that wasn’t enticing enough, the event also features celebrity chefs, specialty cocktails, live music, and a fabulous raffle with a chance to win a California Wine Getaway, making this party an exciting one-of-a-kind extravaganza.

The winning school lunch will be served in high schools city wide, and the students on the winning team will win scholarships to culinary school. Plus, the winning team will be flown to Washington D.C. to compete in the Cooking up Change national finals and serve their healthy school lunch to public officials from across the nation.

Last year’s team from Chicago Vocational Career Academy, won with their menu of oven-fried chicken, “Cousins” collard greens & cabbage, and sweet potato salad.

Cooking up Change is open to the public, and by attending you not only support change for healthier school food, you become part of the change. For more information or to buy tickets, click here!
